A New School Year [OPEN LOG]

It's almost time for school! Time for the yearly trip back to Diagon Alley. New books, potion ingredients, and robe fittings? Absolutely. First years? Go get your wands. More importantly, now's the time to catch up with old friends and see how they've been over the summer.

If it's your first time to Diagon Alley, maybe you can catch someone heading in to show you the way? Don't worry, there's always a helpful witch or wizard about to guide the Muggleborns to the right location if they get a little lost!

[Mabel is probably getting her books leaving Dipper to his own devices. He's looking through all sorts of books and writing titles down in a notebook.]

[This coming school year will be the first year he starts sneaking into the castle, so he's likely not that recognizable unless maybe Mabel has introduced him or if you're familiar with the Mystery Shack in Hogsmeade.]

[Though Finn isn't much for books himself, he did want to find something on mythical creatures this year. So he's walking slowly through the shop while scanning the titles when he spots Dipper. He looks over his shoulder at the notebook with a smile before asking.]

Y'see anythin' interesting?

[Dipper wasn't paying attention to anything outside of what he was doing, so when Finn snuck up- Dipper jumped.]

Oh- um. Yeah. Pretty much everything in here?

[humanhero]

[Oh, whoops. Didn't mean to scare him, but ah well. Finn just shrugs.]

Heh, I figured. ..Have you seen anything on mythical creatures though dude? ...That's kinda what I'm after in here.

[He blinks and nods.]

Actually, yeah. I saw a small section a few rows over for that. Are you looking for mythical creatures from a muggle point of view or like, creatures that are still mythical, even to wizards.

Mmmm...both.

[Both sounded good.]

Just- anythin' on mythical creatures in general actually. I really wanna read up on the kinds of creatures found in the Forbidden Forest, specifically.

Oh, well. I'm pretty sure Fantastic Beasts and Where To Find Them is what you're looking for, then. I was just looking through that one at Obscurus.

[As if he reads much, which he doesn't.]

[Dipper paused to think about that seriously. Then, he flipped to a clean page in his notebook, jotted down a few names and tore it out, handing it to him.]

[Of course he knew Dipper! He and Mabel were in the same house after all-- annnnnd Raz has probably already snuck off to Hogsmeade on his own before. Whoops.

So when he sees the guy looking around, Raz helps himself over by grabbing the top of Dipper's notebook to get it out of the guy's nose and draw his attention to him with a grin.]

Hey--! Are you seriously studying already? I don't think any school year has even started yet.

[Dipper sputters and scowls once he sees who grabbed at his notebook. He pulls it away from him and snaps it shut.]

There's nothing wrong with summer reading.

[The reaction makes him snicker, but at least he relinquished his grip on the notebook.]

Summer reading in a magic shop? Are you just doing Mabel's homework?

Yeah, well, when the alternative is muggle homework, wouldn't you?

[It's gonna take more than that to get him to spill what he's actually up to.]

...I don't think I've actually done muggle homework before, actually.

[Well he was homeschooled before Hogwarts, so...

Nevertheless, he sure wasn't gonna be deterred!!]

So what, you spent the whole summer reading magic books for someone else?

Somehow that knowledge doesn't surprise me.

I didn't read them for someone else- I just read them. Magic is interesting.

Isn't there cooler stuff to read, like comic books? [Muggle or magical, a text book was still a text book...]

Besides, isn't there more stuff in Obscurus if you're just reading for fun. This place mostly has Hogwarts school stuff, after all.

[See, Philip actually is familiar with the Mystery Shack! He loves a good adventure, and the oddities in the Shack are just the sorts of things that really get his mind going. He's surprised to see Dipper in Diagon Alley, especially alone, so he discreetly waves the younger boy over.]

[Oh, hey. One of their customers. Dipper heads over from where he was looking at potion ingredients.]

Yeah, she's over at Sugarplum's, eating them out of house and home.

[Philip gives Dipper a hearty chuckle and a grin.]

I didn't expect anything less. So, why are you not with her? The food's amazing there.

I live in Hogsmeade so I go to Honeydukes all the time. I wanted to see more of the stuff I can't see at home.

Good call. Diagon Alley's full of amazing sights. Just don't make a wrong turn. I wouldn't want you to get swept up in anything above your head.

There's a dark side of Diagon Alley - Knockturn Alley. It's for evil and wizards looking for things to do dark magic. I don't know where it is, but I suggest not going there, especially alone. I don't think your uncle or Mabel would be particularly happy if something bad were to happen...

[On top of that, as a Gryffindor, he's a bit biased against the sorts who shop there to begin with.]

[Sorry, Dipper, Norman isn't talking to you.

In fact, he's not even intentionally talking your way-- there's just a nice old ghost behind you.]

[Dipper looks up- but pauses when he hears 'sir'. Yeah, he's pretty sure he's not talking to him. He does look behind him, though and gives a pretty confused look to the air.]

[Who was this kid talking to? Dipper goes back to his book- but he's listening.]
